If you are constructing a new home, one of the design elements that you may wish to incorporate are green bathrooms. No, green bathrooms don’t mean that your bathrooms are the color green. It means that your bathrooms are environmentally-friendly. Here are a few of the various ways that you can go green with the bathrooms in your new home.
One of the ways you can go green with your new bathroom is with your lighting elements. When possible, position the bathrooms so they receive a fair amount of natural light. Not only does this help to make a smaller space seem larger, but it decreases your need to use light fixtures in the daytime. Selecting energy-efficient light fixtures and bulbs helps to reduce your energy usage in the space when it is dark and you do need to turn on the lights.
Low Flow Fixtures
Another way to go green with your new bathroom is to select low flow fixtures. You can select low flow faucets, shower heads and toilets. Low flow plumbing fixtures help to reduce the amount of water that each plumbing fixture uses without decreasing the amount of water pressure that you get. Plumbing fixtures in a bathroom use a high amount of water, so using low flow fixtures helps you do your part to conserve water.
Speaking of water, another way that you can conserve water in your new bathroom is to apply aerators to any faucets that are not designated as low flow faucets. An aerator screws on to the end of the faucet, reducing the amount of water that comes out at any given time. However, just like a low flow fixture, the aerator is designed to still provide you with the water pressure you need to get the soap off your hands or rinse something off in the sink.
Eco-Friendly and Recycled Materials
The last way you can go green in your bathroom is to use eco-friendly or recycled materials in your space. This includes selecting flooring, cabinets, and countertops that are made from either recycled materials or materials that are better for the environment. For example, bamboo is a very environmentally friendly flooring option, because it is quickly grown, is a renewable resource and uses little water to grow. Or, you can select a glass countertop that has been made from recycled glass materials. Take your time to learn about the various eco-friendly and recycled materials available to you when designing a new bathroom.
