When you are preparing to move into your new home, there are many things that you need to do. Decluttering and packing are at the top of many people’s list, but there are also many other things you need to take care of before you can settle into your new home. Here are a few of the things that you should ensure you do before moving into your new house.

Transfer Your Utilities

Before you can move into your new home, you will need to start service at your new home and end service at your current residence. Many companies will allow you to overlap the services for a few days or even weeks, giving you the time you need to slowly move out of and clean your old house while still having the utilities you need at your new one. Some of the utilities you may need to set up include electricity, gas, water, garbage service, sewer service, cable, internet and home phone.

Update Your Address and Set Up Mail Forwarding

Another thing that you can do before you move into your new house is to update your address and set up mail forwarding. You will need to update your address with your credit card companies, bank, auto and home insurance companies and the DMV.

Install Batteries in Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Once you have the keys to your new home, take the time to ensure that all of your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors have batteries and are operating as they should. Until they have batteries and you have ensured they are operating, you should not allow anyone to sleep in the home.

If you have pets and your new home is in a new city or county than the one in which you are currently residing, you will want to take the time to learn about pet requirements in your town.

Learn About Pet Requirements

If you have pets and your new home is in a new city or county than the one in which you are currently residing, you will want to take the time to learn about pet requirements in your town. You may need to license or register your dog and/or cat. Always learn what the requirements are and how quickly you must do this once you have moved. You can be fined if you fail to do so.

Locate the Circuit Breaker and Shut Off Valves

Lastly, once you are in your new home, take the time to learn where your circuit breakers are and your shut off valves. If you trip a circuit and part of the power goes off in your home, or if there is a water leak in your home, the last thing you want to do is waste time looking for the breaker or shut off valves. Locating them ahead of time makes it fast and easy to do what you need to do.
